Deep Into the Mountains

Pete lives on the side of a mountain in Mexico with his wife and children. He grew up in Midwest, USA, far from where he now lives. His childhood neighbors shared his language, culture, and skin tone; his current ones share none of these. His old neighbors farmed their corn in enormous rolling fields with shiny green or red machines; his current ones carry sticks and rusty shovels to a steep hillside. Many of his boyhood neighbors went to church and understood who God is. The people in his village did not know about a God who loves them before eight or nine years ago.

Pete chases horses off the runway before the next flight comes in.

I spent part of Saturday in Pete’s village. We flew there to shuttle a team of helpers who were also coming from far away. We used the airplane God has provided as a tool for ministry to transport these workers. We got to enjoy the breathtaking views that the villagers call their back yard.

The village sits on the edge of a mesa, deep in the mountains.
The bottom of this canyon is almost 4,000 ft. down.

I am in Mexico to learn from the pilots who have been here many years. My time has been very fruitful and is only half through. I thank God for the opportunity to be here to witness the work and be better equipped to serve.

This is one of the other pilots landing at the airstrip, bringing in part of the work team.

One could say that Pete and his team have made tremendous sacrifices for their work. That is true, but it’s not what this story is about. They have gone to a far corner of the earth because God’s truth is worth telling. The fruit of their long labor is an infant church with a desire to learn more about God.

As pilots, our work is to support and enable their work. Thank you for being part of the team!
