[Un]Settling in Honduras

Our travel to Honduras has gone smoothly. We are settling in well and looking forward to starting intensive language study next week. However, the clouds of political tension are again on the horizon for Honduras, and we ask you to pray.

Our first view of Honduras as we crossed the coastline.

My son and I were watching the Caribbean Sea pass under our window. Each time I looked out, the color of the water was a new hue. Then again I looked and felt a swell of emotion to see Honduras finally in our view. My prayer in that moment was that the name of Christ would spread like a wildfire across this nation, and these lyrics slipped from my tongue:

I exalt you, I exalt you
I exalt you, O Lord!

Welcome to Honduras

A welcome note on our kitchen table

The staff of the Spanish Institute are helping us get settled and discover Siguatepeque. Today we took placement tests, which proved what we already know: we are beginners in Spanish study.

Our apartment has a great view of the city from a neighborhood that is quiet, excepting the rooster population. We are looking forward to meeting some neighbors!

The view from our bedroom window looks down over the city of Siguatepeque, which has been blanketed with fog both mornings so far.

Honduran Political News

As we are getting comfortably settled, today’s news brings angst to many in Honduras. The President’s brother was convicted of several drug trafficking charges in a US Federal Court in New York. The verdict brings more suspicion against a President who has already faced heated opposition and protests this year.

Please pray that peace and righteousness would prevail in Honduras. Events like this one can sometimes result in protests and violence. While we see no direct threat where we are, we are watching carefully to see what happens.

My prayer this evening is that the following verse will be true in Honduras:

Kings of the earth and all peoples,
princes and all rulers of the earth!
Young men and maidens together,
old men and children!
Let them praise the name of the Lord,
for his name alone is exalted;
his majesty is above earth and heaven.

Psalm 148:11-13 (ESV)

We fix our eyes on the one who is true and faithful.
