A Devastated Country

“I had gone seven months without work and three days after I got called back this flooding happened,” the 50-year-old said. “We have family and children. How are we going to feed them?”

“Coming here and finding my daughter dead … she was my only child, I asked God for a girl and look how it’s ended,”

The words of the Hondurans are heartbreaking. Their lives are forever changed. Two category 4 hurricanes arrived within two weeks of each other and both brought devastation that seems unimaginable. The people endured winds and rain, from 20-30 inches, twice. Families were separated, homes and possessions lost, what more could happen, especially during these hard times of COVID? My heart hurts as I see photos and read their stories. I want to be there. I want to be involved, and yet I’m not there. It is a heavy burden on my heart. When I was in Honduras last year learning Spanish I felt a desire to learn their culture and language so that I would be ready to serve them well. Now the need is even greater and I’m eager to return.

Why can’t we go right now? We are finishing up the last few weeks of team building here at MAG and have a few more weeks of final preparing and packing in Ohio. Our team recognizes that this time spent together preparing to work well together will make us more effective in the long run. However, we at MAG are working with a few other missions to bring some tangible relief to those in La Mosquitia. Right before the second hurricane hit MAG was able to orchestrate sending an airplane load of food and distribute it to some of the villages along with seeds for replanting their crops. Because La Mosquitia is so remote, they raise all of their food. Now their crops are washed away. The need is great, and we are continuing to pray for provision, restoration and most importantly that their hearts would be open to the gospel. While this is a tremendous tragedy and loss, it does swing door wide open for ministry all over the country. When there is nothing there becomes room for something- the gospel!

Please pray for other countries affected by the hurricanes and the people in La Mosquitia.

Here is a news clip from NBC News that shows some of the flooding in Honduras.
