Another week of VBS happened back at the end of January. This time we were joined by a family from one of our churches in Ohio. They came to visit us in Rus Rus for nearly a month and we were so glad to spend time with them and their children. They were a tremendous help with VBS and they also laid some new tile in the hospital in anticipation of the upcoming brigade.
During this round of VBS we went out of town in the other direction, our focus directed at a few farms and the areas surrounding. That day we were so surprised as we pulled in to see a massive group of children standing in orderly rows waiting for us. Usually here, people don’t start to arrive until 30 minutes after the event is supposed to start and then they trickle in over the next hour. Here not so. These children came down river by boat and had probably been waiting for us for an hour or so. Not only was there children but also quite a few parents who had accompanied their kiddos on the trip. It was estimated around 120+ kids came.
A lot of these kids came from Nicaragua and only spoke mosquito, which proved to be a bit of a challenge during crafts and lunch time when there were no translators available.
We ended up combining both days into one, because the kids had traveled so far. That way they wouldn’t have to make another long trip the following day. After lunch we jumped right into the second day’s lesson.
Two days later we drove to another remote farm. There we had a nice manageable crowd of children and even a few young men that came. Everyone was so attentive and we really enjoyed spending time with this crowd.
We left that farm on the second day with warmth in our hearts. The little community had blessed us with their hospitality and sense of community. We came to serve them and instead they unknowingly served us. Isn’t God incredible?!
