Medical Outreach

The last few weeks we have busied ourselves mostly with preparing for our biggest annual event: a regional medical outreach we call the Medical Brigade. Every year we bring a team of doctors, dentists, and other professionals to Rus Rus and patients come from all of the villages in our area to be seen. Since we are so remote, it is a logistical puzzle to get all the people, food, medications, and supplies necessary. This week are are in the middle of the event. The halls of the Rus Rus Hospital are reverberating with voices and movement. As I sit in the records room writing this, I hear a symphony of sounds:

  • A young boy cries in protest as a rotten tooth is extracted from his mouth
  • The translator in the nursery explains to a patient in Miskito how often to take the medication he has been prescribed.
  • A local health volunteer in the hallway is directing a patient to stand on the scale
  • A nurse is calling a patients name from the doorway to come in and receive her treatment

In all the noise and bustle, there are small moments of personal connection and ministry happening all over. Pastors are praying and sharing God’s word. Parents are being taught how to care for their children’s teeth. A smile, handshake, and “Ā”Bienvenida!” reminds someone they are cared for.

Continue in prayer for the last couple of days of this outreach event. There are still costs that have not been covered. If you’re interested in helping, you can go to www.flymag.org/donate and give toward “Honduras Medical Outreach.” Thanks for your support!
