Three Reasons We Are Joining MMS Aviation

In the last postI discussed the place that MMS Aviation fills in the mission community. But there are many good organizations doing mission aviation work. Why are we joining MMS in particular? Here are three reasons:

  1. It is where God is calling us. There are some questions about His calling that we still can’t answer definitively, like “How long will you be doing this?” and “Are you going to be in Africa?” We just don’t know. One thing that has been very clear from the first day, though, is the call to MMS Aviation. Consistently, God has confirmed this detail of His plan. This alone is sufficient reason, in my way of thinking.
  2. It is a better way to get there. There are a couple ways a young mechanic like myself gets into the mission field, where demands are high and margin for error is small. He can come to the table with plenty of aviation experience under his belt (which I don’t have much of), or he can go to college for the training, and incur student loans (which I don’t want much of). If neither of those two options look probable, he may figure that his shot at a missionary position is pretty lean. That’s what I thought, until I discovered MMS Aviation.
  3. We like the way they do things. As we have observed and interacted with MMS, we have come to appreciate them more and more. They are focused on a very specific mission, and they stick with it. In doing so, they provide a very valuable service (in 2012, the organization saved the missionary community $500,000 in labor costs alone). We are also attracted to the atmosphere and the spirit of the people who work there.

As we survey the landscape of the mission aviation community, we see a lot of organizations that are doing good work. Every one of them is a unique combination of purpose, culture, and method. We are very thankful that God is calling us to an organization that we are excited to be a part of, one where we feel welcome and wanted, and, most importantly, one where we can move forward in the confidence that this is where God wants us to be.

Thank you for your prayers on our behalf. May the Lord be praised.
