This Week In The Hangar – Winshields and Paint Stripper

This week was an exciting one at MMS Aviation. There was a lot going on. This Beech King Air came into the shop with a shattered windshield. The pilot said he was cruising at about 20,000 feet when it happened. With no warning, the windshield shattered with a loud crack. He is fortunate it stayed together, and that it was not on the side he was sitting.

One of our mechanics removed the old windshield this week, and just today got the new one installed, mostly.

On a pressurized airplane, window installations are critical. It takes a lot of care and attention to detail to make sure it is sealed properly. The fit has to be almost perfect to maintain the integrity of the structure. I am glad there was someone available with more experience than I have.

My task this week has been stripping paint from a set of tail surfaces for a Piper Comanche.

It is a very messy and tedious job, but it is rewarding to get it all down to bare metal, even the nooks and crannies. Once the old paint was gone, I applied a paint prep treatment. They are ready for a final clean. Because of scheduling, they will go into storage for a couple of weeks, then we will repaint them.

I am thankful for God’s care through this week, keeping us safe and helping us in our work. It is such a pleasure to work in this shop, putting our hands into God’s kingdom.
