Ye did it unto Me

Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

Matthew 24:34-40

I’ve been so blessed by these verses. They are a good reminder to me to shift my focus outward and to be listening to the Spirit’s promptings. There are always needs around us, some obvious, some small. Some are huge, God sized, and others are small, like a hug. God calls us to step out and meet the needs of others. To forget ourselves, our agenda, our preferences and simply obey. The Spirit plays an important role in this too. He opens our eyes to the needs around us and prompts our hearts. But simply knowing about a need isn’t good enough, we need to act, and act quickly. Jesus met the needs of the sick, hungry ect. immediately. He didn’t sit around and wait for his schedule to open up. Or wait until He felt like doing it. He even went against His own human preference and gave His very life for people who didn’t even want Him.

Talk about being selfless! I want to be more like that. Firstly, to be awakened to the needs of others, my family yes, but also the needs of those that I pass by every day. Secondly to meet those needs to the best of my ability, not out of duty or with my feet dragging, but with JOY! Pure unhindered joy.
